Accessibility
Last reviewed: October 23, 2026
I want everyone to be able to read philsteptoe.com, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, voice control, or other assistive technologies.
Standard
The Site aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
What the Site does
- Pages use clear headings, landmarks, and a logical reading order, with skip links on essay pages.
- Images and charts have text alternatives, and the figures in each chart are also given in the essay’s text or tables.
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, and links show a visible outline when focused.
- Text can be zoomed to 200%, and pages reflow on small screens without sideways scrolling.
- Animations are switched off when your device’s Reduce Motion setting is on.
- There is no audio, video, auto-playing media, time limit, CAPTCHA, or form.
Conformance status
The Site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which means some content does not yet fully conform. Known limitations:
- Some small labels on essay pages, such as section numbers, the contents list, and figure captions, use light gray text below the recommended contrast ratio. Section labels and the contents list repeat the headings they point to.
- Charts are provided as images. Each has a text alternative that summarizes it, and the underlying figures appear in the essay.
Alternative formats
All content on the Site is text-based HTML, so you can use your browser’s and device’s built-in tools to change how it is presented: Reader View, text-to-speech (such as VoiceOver, TalkBack, or Narrator), zoom and text-size settings, high-contrast modes, and Print or Save as PDF.
How this was assessed
The Site was self-evaluated with automated testing (axe-core and Google Lighthouse) and manual review, including keyboard navigation, the Reduce Motion setting, and desktop and mobile browsers at screen widths down to 320 pixels.
Ongoing improvement
I review accessibility when the Site changes and address known issues as it evolves. This statement will be updated as that work progresses.
